2015 BMW X5 Vehicle Overview
Comfort & Convenience
BMW Navigation System with iDrive touchpad Controller
Wherever you're going, get there confidently with the BMW X5 Navigation System with iDrive. Advanced Real Time Traffic Information displays local traffic updates, including delays and alternate routes to keep you one step ahead. The ECO PRO navigation feature directs you to the most fuel-efficient route, while Proactive Driving Assistant lets you know when best to ease off the accelerator to maximize fuel savings. And the easy-to-use iDrive touchpad controller and three-dimensional map displays makes reaching your destination easier and more enjoyable than ever.
Concierge Services with Critical Calling
Wherever you travel, friendly Concierge Services representatives assist you with local restaurant and hotel recommendations, movie times and ticket information, flight arrival and departure gates and times, fuel prices and availability, and much more. You can also get the "Points of Interest" (POI) download, which allows the representative to send addresses and phone numbers to your vehicle. This information can then be transferred to your BMW Navigation system for route guidance, or for calling from your Bluetooth linked mobile phone.
This driver-assistance system searches for suitable parking spots and then steers your vehicle into them. Simply press the "Park Assistant" button, then drive along potential parking spaces on either side of the road, staying below 22 mph and no more than five feet away. Using ultrasonic sensors integrated into the side indicators, the system searches for and measures parking spaces. When a space at least four feet longer than your vehicle is spotted, it is shown on your Control Display. Shift into reverse and Parking Assistant takes control of steering your vehicle into the selected space; all you have to do is operate the accelerator and brake pedals. The acoustic and visual warnings of Park Distance Control provide assistance to get you and your vehicle efficiently into the space.
Innovative and easy to operate, the Comfort Access system makes it possible to open both the vehicle doors and trunk and start the engine without having to use the car key. The key, even when not in your hand, is automatically recognized upon approaching the car. Once the door has been automatically unlocked, the driver can get in and start the engine by pressing the Start/Stop button. The driver's foot must be on the brake or, with manual transmission, must also depress the clutch in order to start.
Dynamic Damper Control and Rear Axle Air Suspension
Dynamic Damper Control along with the air suspension for the rear axle allows you to adjust to different road conditions for more comfortable driving and transport of cargo. So you can ride relaxed even on the roughest roads.
Part of ConnectedDrive, BMW Apps lets you access social networks, music plug-ins and video playback through your iPhone® and Android® device, and see them on the display screen (requires Navigation). Tune in to web radio and search for stations from around the globe by name, location or genre, and store your favorite ones on your iPhone so you can take them with you from one vehicle to another. You can access Twitter and Facebook accounts to stay on top of your social media, and enjoy music on-demand with Pandora® Radio. And with the GoPro App, you’ll even be able to control your GoPro camera using the iDrive system.
iDrive 4.2: Now with touchpad Controller
The new iDrive 4.2 navigation system showcases an optimized menu display with state-of-the-art technologies, like advanced real-time traffic data. And, a new iDrive rotary controller with an integrated touchpad makes it easy for drivers on the go to enter destinations, phone numbers and more.
BMW Mobile Office
BMW Mobile Office, as part of BMW ConnectedDrive, keeps you connected no matter where the road leads by integrating many office functions into the main menu of your vehicle’s iDrive screen. You can conveniently organize your daily events, and browse through emails, texts and tasks on the screen or have them read aloud over the audio speakers.
Harman Kardon® Surround Sound System
It's a sound experience as remarkable as the BMW driving experience. Unlike traditional stereo systems, the optional Harman Kardon® surround sound system uses vehicle-specific equalizing, and a powerful 600W amplifier, to deliver powerful, high-current, ultrawide-bandwidth. The result: a scintillating audio performance that pumps the highest definition soundtrack to the open road. The 16-speaker system also includes six tweeters, four mid-range speakers located in the door panels and two mid-range speakers located under the rear shelf space, two bass speakers located under the front seats, one midrange center channel speaker, and one tweeter located in the instrument panel.
Bluetooth® Audio Streaming
Bluetooth® Audio Streaming-available from BMW ConnectedDrive-wirelessly plays the music saved on your Bluetooth-capable smartphone or MP3 player.
Performance & Efficiency
3.0-Liter, TwinPower Turbo Inline 6-Cylinder Engine, 300 hp
This unique engine combines a twin-scroll TwinPower Turbo, High Precision direct fuel injection, and BMW's Valvetronic variable intake technology that helps the engine "breathe" better. The result: turbo lag is virtually eliminated, while posting one of the most fuel-efficient ratings in its class. The X5 sDrive35i TwinPower Turbo develops maximum output of 300 hp at 5800 rpm. Peak torque of 300-lb-ft kicks in almost immediately at 1200 rpm. It continues to push you back in your seat all the way to 5000 rpm. In just 6.2 seconds* you're easily passing 60-mph - and just as easily surpassing all expectations.
8-Speed STEPTRONIC Sport Automatic Transmission
Prepare for an unprecedented level of vehicle response. The 8-speed STEPTRONIC sport automatic transmission features high internal efficiency, precision, and short shift times for improved gear shifting, more responsive performance and reduced fuel consumption.
Additionally, the transmission features Launch Control, a high-precision traction system that translates engine power into road speed efficiently, launching you from a standstill with breathtaking acceleration.
Driving Dynamics Control
Maintain the highest level of comfort, agility and efficiency in all road conditions with innovative drive train and chassis technologies and optimized driving modes, now including ECO PRO.
With Driving Dynamics Control, you determine which personality of the BMW X5 shines through with the push of a button. We've enhanced each mode so that SPORT driving mode feels more athletic, SPORT+ guarantees maximum performance, and COMFORT+ driving mode gears all of the connected systems - such as Dynamic Damper Control (if equipped) and the transmission - toward ultimate ease of traveling.
And now, the new ECO PRO mode adapts accelerator pedal and gearbox responses while also moderating heating/air-conditioning systems to maximize fuel efficiency. It also takes traffic density, individual driving style and local conditions into account, then offers directions optimized for efficiency and minimal travel time.
Dynamic Performance Control + Active Roll Stabilization
Dynamic Performance Control smoothly distributes power between the rear wheels for ultimate agility and sporty handling. When cornering, the outside wheel receives more power, allowing you to drive "into" curves. At the same time, Active Roll Stabilization minimizes body roll and enables the BMW X5 to transform tight corners into straightaways.
Even when idling, such as at a stop sign, an engine burns fuel. BMW's Auto Start-Stop function enhances fuel efficiency by switching off the engine. (The intelligent electronics system first checks the battery charge level and calculates if other electric systems, like the heated front seats need more energy.) Once the brake pedal is released, the engine starts up again almost instantly. A Start-Stop signal in the display indicates the function is active.
Safety & Security
BMW Assist eCall™ and TeleServices
In an emergency, BMW Assist eCall, now standard in most BMWs, automatically sends your location and relevant information to police and EMT services, saving critical time when you need it most. Also standard with BMW Teleservices, your BMW knows exactly when the next servicing appointment is coming up and informs you about any maintenance requirements. Your BMW Service Center will call you to arrange an appointment. Wherever you are, your BMW Service Center is at your side.
Active Driving Assistant
Drive more confidently with the camera-based Active Driving Assistant. The BMW X5 includes Lane Departure Warning, which alerts you when you drift lanes with a visible signal and steering wheel vibration. Additionally, Pedestrian and Collision Warning detects hazards on a collision course with the vehicle, and depending on driving conditions, initiates the braking system to reduce vehicle speed and prevent critical situations before they occur.
Displays video images of approaching traffic on the Control Display. Side-view cameras positioned in the front bumpers show traffic approaching the front of the vehicle from the sides, such as when exiting a garage. The Top-view camera provides video images of the road alongside the doors, taken by cameras positioned in the exterior mirrors. All these cameras come together to generate an incredible bird's-eye view of the vehicle's surrounding environment.
Full Color Head-Up Display
Full Color Head-Up Display projects key information onto the windshield directly in the driver's field of view to minimize distractions. Responsive to light conditions around them, the projections can be easily adjusted using the iDrive Controller. Depending on the vehicle specification and equipped optional features, the display not only shows current speed, but speed limits, navigation instructions, and various warning messages. And now, with a touch of a button on the steering wheel, you can also scroll through music libraries or change radio stations.
Park Distance Control
Eight sensors - four in the front, four in the rear - help you judge how close you are to other vehicles and unseen objects when parking. And in coordination with Surround View, Park Distance Control lets you know if your vehicle can fit in a space before you begin pulling in.
2014 BMW X5 Vehicle Overview
Fourteen model years later, BMW is hoping that it still knows what you want with its redesigned 2014 BMW X5. Performance? Luxury? Utility? Yep, it's all still here. BMW says it wanted to keep everything previous X5 owners liked. But it also wanted to bring the vehicle as up to date as possible. And we have to admit, it makes sense: Even last year, the final year of the previous, second-generation model, the BMW X5 was one of our favorite picks for a midsize luxury crossover SUV.
For the 2014 model, you get the feeling that BMW is stepping carefully. The new X5 looks a lot like the previous model. Overall size and weight are pretty much the same, effectively guaranteeing the X5's capable handling and stability remain intact. The interior is similar as well, though this time it's a bit roomier and classier-looking. The second-row seat is now split in 40/20/40 sections, improving utility, and a third-row seat is still available. Of course, the X5 can still be loaded up with features to your heart's content, and this year you can select different design themes for a bit of extra customization.
The turbocharged inline-6 in the 35i trim level is still available and unchanged. The X5 50i's turbocharged V8 is still here, too, though it now produces a heady 450 horsepower and gets slightly better fuel economy to boot. The most intriguing choice this time around is the 35d model and its diesel-fueled engine. Its 255-hp output is essentially the same as before, but it gets a few tweaks and is finally paired to the eight-speed automatic for even better fuel economy.
What's New for 2014
The 2014 BMW X5 has been fully redesigned. Evolutionary in nature, it features updated styling, revised engines and slightly more interior space.
Body Styles, Trim Levels, and Options
The 2014 BMW X5 will come in three main trim levels: 35i, 35d and 50i, which essentially indicate what's under the hood. All have all-wheel drive ("xDrive"), though there is also a rear-drive version of the 35i available ("sDrive").
Standard equipment for the 35i and 35d include 18-inch wheels, adaptive xenon headlights, foglights, a panoramic sunroof, a power liftgate, front and rear parking sensors, automatic dual-zone climate control, a power tilt-and-telescoping steering wheel, leatherette (premium vinyl) upholstery, 10-way power front seats (with four-way power lumbar), driver memory settings and heated front seats. Electronic features include BMW Assist, Bluetooth phone and audio connectivity, smartphone app integration, a 10.2-inch central display screen, the iDrive controller, a navigation system, voice controls (navigation), and a nine-speaker sound system with a CD player, a USB interface and HD radio..
The X5 xDrive50i is equipped very similarly, though it has 19-inch wheels, leather upholstery, 16-way power ("multicontour") front seats, a rearview camera and a top-down camera system as additional standard features..
Naturally, a wealth of option packages is available to further customize your X5. Starting things off are three optional equipment lines -- Luxury, xLine and M Sport -- that include different wheel designs (up to 20 inches), color schemes and trim and upholstery types. M Sport also includes sport front seats and a sport steering wheel with shift paddles for the transmission..
From here, you can go with the Premium package that adds soft-close automatic doors, keyless ignition/entry, satellite radio and leather upholstery (35i and 35d). The Luxury Seating package gets you the 16-way power front seats (35i and 35d) and ventilation for the front seats. The Cold Weather package includes a heated steering wheel and heated rear seats..
The Driver Assistance package features a rearview camera and a head-up display (35i and 35d). To this, the Driver Assistance Plus package adds adaptive cruise control, blind-spot monitoring, a top-down camera system, speed-limit info, lane departure warning, forward collision warning (including pedestrians) and city collision mitigation. The Dynamic Handling package adds adaptive suspension dampers, a rear air suspension and active suspension antiroll bars..
Some of these features are available as stand-alone options. Other X5 options include active steering, LED headlights, automatic high-beam control, automated parking assist, upgraded and/or extended leather upholstery, upgraded interior trim, four-zone automatic climate control, rear window manual sunshades, second-row comfort seats and a third-row seat (includes the rear air suspension). You can also order a 16-speaker Harman Kardon surround-sound audio system or an even more expensive 16-speaker Bang & Olufsen surround-sound system. Lastly, a rear-seat entertainment system and a night-vision camera system are available.
Powertrains and Performance
The sDrive35i (rear-wheel drive) and xDrive35i (all-wheel drive) models feature a 3.0-liter turbocharged inline six-cylinder engine that produces 300 hp and 300 pound-feet of torque. All X5s regardless of engine or drive configuration get an eight-speed automatic transmission. All xDrive versions also have hill descent control.
The EPA estimates the sDrive35i's fuel economy at 22 mpg combined (19 mpg city/27 mpg highway).
The xDrive35d features a diesel-powered 3.0-liter turbocharged inline-6 that produces 255 hp and 413 lb-ft of torque.
The xDrive50i gets a turbocharged 4.4-liter V8 good for 450 hp and 479 lb-ft of torque. At the pump, you're looking at 17 mpg combined (14 mpg city/22 mpg highway).
Every 2014 BMW X5 includes stability and traction control, antilock brakes, automatic brake drying, front side airbags, side curtain airbags and active head restraints. Also standard is the BMW Assist emergency communications system, which provides automatic crash notification, stolen vehicle recovery and on-demand roadside assistance.
Optional safety features are effectively grouped into the Driver Assistance packages, and they include a rearview camera, blind-spot monitoring, a top-down camera system, lane departure warning, forward collision warning and a collision mitigation system that can apply the vehicle's brakes automatically to prevent or minimize a head-on impact at low speeds.
Interior Designs and Special Features
As with most BMWs, the X5's interior layout is elegant, with solid construction and high-quality materials. Models with the upgraded and extended leather options are particularly impressive. From the driver seat, you're presented with classic BMW gauges and a large central display screen with crisp graphics. The front seats are nicely shaped and adjust for a wide range of body types, while the optional multicontour seats offer even more adjustments.
The iDrive interface works well for controlling and adjusting all of the X5's systems, and this year's version includes a touchpad on the control knob for handwritten inputs. One distinct attribute of the X5 continues to be its split two-section liftgate. The lower, smaller section pulls down flat, making it easy to sit on for tailgating.
